The People Who Make Voxox Rock: Penn Jillette Meets Gaming Geek

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Sep 19, 2011

The Voxox team isn’t just your ordinary group of geeks, we’re a group of wild and enthusiastic people who love what we do! “Just another day at the office” doesn’t apply here. Whether it’s Nerf gun wars, free ice cream extravaganzas, or Monday morning bagels, there’s always something for us to get excited about! Get to know the team with our  behind the scenes, Q&A style blog series, “The People Who Make Voxox Rock”…

Nickname: [>Bowtie<]

Department/Position: Director of Quality Assurance

What is Quality Assurance (QA)?: Quality Assurance is one of the tools we use to measure how effective our software is. We are constantly measuring our products and services to ensure that we are consistently maintaining or adding to the value that Voxox provides. One thing not well understood about QA is that it's a very broad discipline: it's not just about testing, but I must also be familiar with multiple platforms of technology, networking, infrastructure, implementation and delivery--working in QA keeps my chops warm in all of these areas, and then some.

What’s your favorite part about working here?: For the first time in a long time, I'm working with people I really like--every one of them, from every part of the organization, we have great talent and fun, focused energy. I love startups, but we have something special here with the Voxox team, and I think it's one of our greatest hidden strengths at our company, Telcentris, Inc.

What are your hidden talents or hobbies?: Almost too many to name: I'm a musician (bass player), a photographer, a serigrapher (fine art screen printing), a hiker/backpacker, and a poker player. But I've always been a computer geek. My dad ran a Radio Shack, and brought home our first computer when I was twelve. I immediately took it over, teaching myself to program that summer. I started coding games--my first was a port of Donkey Kong--and by the time I was 16, I had over 20 games on the market. But I soon branched out into other software types, building word processors, music transcription, sound wave analysis and language compilers. I also ran The Boardwalk Bulletin Board System (BBS). A BBS was a kind of local precursor to the Internet, using home computers and modems and phone lines. Currently, I’m working with textfiles.org to try to archive the history of The Boardwalk, as we think it is one of the earliest examples of what would eventually become an MMORPG like Everquest or World of Warcraft."

How did you get your nickname?: It’s kind of a long story, but it came about when I was running The Boardwalk BBS from 1982 to 1986, which at its peak had over 300 paying users. It was modeled on (my fourteen-year-old imagined) 1920's-era Atlantic City, and had casinos, games, gangs, hotels--everything I could think of. Users would sign onto the BBS and take on a character with a name and character details and money (kind of like a role-playing game). Users would have to treat their character like an actual person--you couldn't just sign off and leave your character wandering The Boardwalk--that was the fastest way to get mugged, lose all your money, and find yourself in the sand under The Boardwalk the next time you signed in.  On the BBS, I was [>Bowtie<] -- shortened to [><] -- a mob boss that ran all of the casinos, and the guy behind the scenes on all of the weird happenings on The Boardwalk.

Who is your doppelganger?: Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller (but I have to grow my hair out and pull it back in a ponytail).

Shaken or stirred?: Tossed out and filled with Long Island Iced Tea.

How do you take your coffee?: Tossed out and filled with Pepsi.

When you were little, what did you want to be?: An Architect! (I'm being serious, but that's also my Monty Python reference for the day).

What should people know about Voxox?: The message of unification is really important. Looking across the landscape of communications, the rest of the industry is bent on building "walled gardens" designed to lock you into *their* tools and *their* way of thinking. I think this is a real danger to the open nature of the Internet and to real freedoms--people can get locked into these gardens without really understanding the implications, and not all of these companies have the best of intentions. Voxox turns all of that on its head by reaching around those walls and allowing our users to consolidate and own their communications entirely, and I think that's more in spirit with the notion of an open and democratic communications platform.

Think you've got what it takes to ace this quiz? Show off how well you know "Bowtie"...

Ode to Bad Poetry Day

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Sep 16, 2011

In the spirit of Bad Poetry Day (which is today!) and for your reading pleasure, the Voxox team got together and wrote an awesomely bad poem on the benefits and features of VoIP service.

How did such a beautiful composition come to be, you ask? Over the past few days, a paper has been floating around the office requesting that each team member to write a line based only upon the line before it.  This has been a masterpiece in progress and we're pleased to share with you our ode to Bad Poetry Day:

The Wonders of VoIP

If you know what VoIP is, you know of its wonders,

No more crazy phone bill and/or cell tower blunders.

So many cool features, you can call all the zones,

Hosted, SIP Trunk, white label for so few bones.

We’re battling the clones with service that totally pones,

At prices that mean sweet service without any loans.

All Poems should rhyme, especially when they’re about VoIP.

Who needs the competition? Don’t give into the hype,

Get to picking now, while the pickings ripe,

Unify your communication! Unify your life!

Ask for VoIP, then watch and learn how simple it can be,

You’ll love G722, the HD codec, when called on-net it’s FREE!

I talk, I chat, I live in a numberless landscape of your whispers,

I thought to text you, but it was fleeting, like the cooling of Las Vegas misters.

Instead, I called you and your "Find Me" was set to every phone device nearby,

Creating a ringback racket louder than the introduction of Pink Floyd’s “Money!”.

‘Cause I’m out in the club and I’m sippin’ that bubb, and you’re not gonna reach my telephone --

You’ll reach my personal assistant!

That’s what they (girls) all say, it’s a good thing I’m persistent.

When life’s lemons get in my way, just make an adjustment,

With calls that cost just cents, even from a tent!

VoIP is the flower like bees makin’ honey,

And if you live in Australia, you can call from the Dunny*,

So keep usin’ Voxox, if you like savin’ money!

*Definition of Dunny: Dunny or dunny can is Australian slang for toilet, either the room or the specific fixture, especially an outhouse or other outdoor toilets. It is often used to specify a distinction between a flushing toilet and a non-flushing toilet (e.g., a longdrop or thunderbox). (Source: wiki).

"The final product. Crumpled and perfect!"

Poetry at it's finest, right? We've gotten in touch with our Shakespearean side, now it's your turn! Share your bad poetry right here or on our Facebook page...

Study: Affluent Americans Spend More Time Online, Buy More Smartphones

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Sep 07, 2011

Did you ever think that the number of hours you spend watching TV could be directly correlated with your income level? What about your Internet browsing habits or which type of cell phone you have? According to a recent study Affluent Consumers in a Digital World, the economic gap between wealthy and economically less fortunate Americans affects more than just how much money is in their pocket, it changes the way they consume media.

Picture Caption: Digital Media Consumption

The study shows that people with a higher income spend more time on the Internet and are more likely to own high-tech devices such as  smartphones. Out of this group, nearly 32% (compared to 23% of the lower income population) say they prefer a more customized online experience, even if that means sharing personal information to get it. Although they're willing to share personal information for a customized experience in return, 29% of this affluent group also reported feeling uncomfortable at times because online advertisements were too targeted.

So who are these affluent online, high-techies who have a love-hate relationship with online personalization you ask? They are a small minority -- approximately one-fifth of U.S. households, or 24 million people. Although this group is tiny compared to the total U.S. population (a little more than 307 million), they hold approximately 60% of U.S. household wealth and 70% of U.S. consumer wealth -- an annualized income of at least $100,000.

The wealthy who spend more time online also spend more money on online purchases of consumer goods or services than those who rake in less dough. Traditionally, the hardest to reach consumers through traditional media such as  TV and radio advertisements, higher income households are the biggest consumers of digital media and exceed non-affluent Internet use by nearly 20%. These facts are precisely why online advertisers are developing new ways to build relationships and customize content in hopes to extend affluent consumers' spending power to their brands.

Tell us, if you had $1,000,000 which one of these real-life extravagant high-tech devices would you buy to stay on top of industry trends?

Do you have a better idea? Post your luxury device wishlist here or on the Voxox Facebook page!

The People Who Make Voxox Rock: Pregnant Perfectionista

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Aug 19, 2011

The Voxox team isn’t just your ordinary group of geeks, we’re a group of wild and enthusiastic people who love what we do! “Just another day at the office” doesn’t apply here. Whether it’s Nerf gun wars, free ice cream extravaganzas, or Monday morning bagels, there’s always something for us to get excited about! Get to know the team with our new behind the scenes,Q&A style blog series, “The People Who Make Voxox Rock”

Name: Heidi

Department/Position: Executive Assistant (plus President & Co-founder of the Voxox Fun Committee)

How would you explain your day-to-day? Well, every day is different depending on what's going on in the office. I usually try to get basic administrative stuff done when I first get in - pick up the mail, manage emails, and of course, say good morning to everybody! I help out anywhere people need it. One day I'll be busy scheduling appointments with investors, the next I'll help with shipping labels, filing, and scanning. The more we work as a team, the faster we accomplish our goals. I know a lot about the company and different departments because I really try and make sure everything runs smoothly. Most importantly, I try to maintain the office appearance. When we have visitors it's my job to give them the best first impression, so having the office look good is vital!

What should people know about Voxox? Voxox makes chatting on different networks really convenient - that's my primary use for Voxox. I have friends on Voxox, Google Chat, and Facbeook that I talk to, and Voxox lets me have them in one window instead of switching back and forth between pages... no more blinking tabs or overlooking messages! Being able to switch from chatting to texting in the same window is really cool to me, too. With Voxox you can program in your friend's number and their screen name all under their contact card, so if they leave their computer you can keep the conversation going by sending texts from Voxox to their cell.

What's your greatest accomplishment since you've been with Voxox? No one before me took ownership of the job. They just did the basics - answered the phone, filled the printer, etc.- but I've really put in the effort to streamline processes and shop around to find the best deals on things we need like office supplies and shipping, as well as stuff we all want like coffee! It's really about personal pride. I've always been that way. I take a lot of pride in my work, even if people don’t notice, I notice. I do what I can!

Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies? Lets see, I'm pregnant... does that count as a talent? No? Ok, well I love to paint, dance, and sing - anything artistic and expressive. I used to paint a lot, but now that I'm getting everything ready for my baby I haven't really had time. I'm trying my best to finish a set of paintings I've been working on for her nursery, I'm so excited! I'm trying to learn how to do things around the house too. My husband and I just renovated our kitchen by ourselves, we're becoming our own interior designers! When I was in high school I used to be in the show choir; it's like performing short skits through singing and dancing. My favorite song was Footloose, it was just so fun... get footloose!! All the spinning and jumping requires a lot of coordination, which is is difficult for me sometimes. I never fell though, which is impressive. Also, my arms do a funky double jointed thing that always gets a lot of laughs and I've never had a cavity.

Last restaurant you ate at? Souplantation. I had salad, clam chowder, ice cream - I always get the ice cream - and fruit. I'm allergic to gluten so it's kind of limiting. Well, the clam chowder isn't gluten-free, but it's just so good I had to have it.

What's the wallpaper on your cell phone? Right now, it's a bridge and clouds. Let me explain. My grandma sends me lots of emails. She forwards me things like LOLCats, pictures of cats and unicorns hugging, "The People of Wal-mart" links, and slide shows of nature scenes. It makes me think of her and how proud I am that she is never afraid to try new things, even at 78 she isn’t scared of technology. She never stops learning, and I admire her so much for it..

Your most embarrassing moment? When I was a freshman in high school I had a huge backpack and one day I was trying to shimmy over a short fence and, of course, I fell over in front of a bunch of Senior guys. I stood up, said, "Thank you. Thank you," and took a bow. My policy is: if you can’t laugh at yourself, someone else will do it for you!

Now that you know a little more about Heidi's show-tunes past and her love for clam chowder, we want to know what you think about her! As her baby bump gets bigger, more and more bets and predications around the due date have been circulating the office. Get in on the action and take our poll to see if you can predict when her baby will arrive... we'll let you know the results as soon as she shares the great news!

When will Heidi's baby arrive?

If you want to know more about Heidi or have any questions you want us to ask our next Voxox rock star, let us know here or on our Facebook page!
