Today's teens are growing up in a world where Internet connection and communication flow is not only constant, but expected, and where tools like Voxox are needed just to keep their online lives in check. Back to School: 4 Ways Voxox Call iPhone App Can Help Your College Life

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Aug 12, 2011

For some of us, the end of summer comes with mixed feelings. We'll miss the beach days, pool parties, sunny days, warm nights... but it also means the beginning of new adventures. For example,  going off to college for the first time and experiencing new-found freedom. Of course, with that freedom comes some financial responsibility, and, in this economy, it's not a bad idea to find ways to save on keeping up with friends and family. Check out a few ways the Voxox Call iPhone app can help you save as you start off the new school year:

1) Free phone number in your new state

If you’re starting school in another state (U.S.), you may want to get a second phone number with that state’s area code. When you sign up (free) for Voxox -- either for Voxox Call for iPhone or Voxox for the desktop -- you get a free phone number that forwards to any of your other phones. This feature works similarly to Google Voice, however if you have family in multiple states or in Canada, you can also get additional phone numbers for less than two bucks a month. This way, your out-of-state grandma can call you at a dedicated number that's local for her. (Maybe she'll even pay for it, since you're trying to save her money!) If you're an international student with family in another country, you could achieve the same effect with our free global access number ( iNum), which allow folks in 45+ countries to call Voxox phone numbers at local rates.

2) Cheap or free worldwide SMS over Wi-Fi or mobile Internet

Let's talk about that unlimited texting plan you have with your carrier -- you may want to cancel it and use this way cheaper option instead.  With the Voxox Call app, you can text over the Internet on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. It's free to receive texts; one penny to send in the U.S. and Canada; 2 cents to send anywhere else in the world. Plus, if you have the Voxox desktop software, it all works together, so, you can send and receive texts through the same account from your computer and your iOS devices, depending on what you have on you.

3) Long-distance calls for pennies

If you're a student on a budget, you might consider downgrading your wireless plan to regionally-restricted / local calling and using the Voxox Call app to dial out of state. Our awesome callback functionality lets you dial out of state without paying an outbound toll. It works like this: you dial a number and Voxox calls you back with the person on the line. Your carrier counts this as an incoming call, and incoming calls typically don't incur toll fees.  You just pay a penny per minute for calls to the U.S. and Canada and varying cheap rates for calls to other parts of the world.  You may want to confirm your carrier's policies, just in case.

4) Free and cheap faxing

For college students who may need to receive a fax, whether it's financial aid paperwork, rental agreement, work study application, etc., Voxox Call iPhone app offers free inbound faxing. You can receive, view and forward faxes on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. If you ever need to send a fax, just download the Voxox desktop app for free. Sending faxes through Voxox will cost you just a few pennies and no stress. Voxox has the only free phone number in the world that’s voice-, SMS- and fax-enabled (plus free voicemail transcription, too!), so why not take advantage?

So there you have it-- four tips that may just help you save a few bucks in college... think of all the extra coffee! Have any other tips of your own?  Share them by commenting here or on the Voxox Facebook page.

Techy vs. Tacky: Email Etiquette to Save Face (and Maybe Your Job!)

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Jul 21, 2011

Have you ever sent an angry email you later regretted or hit "reply all" when the inside joke about your boss' disco moves at last year's Christmas party was meant only for your close colleague? If not, you're lucky (or slow to hit the send button). Most of us have fallen victim to a hasty reply, and although we send numerous emails every day, we still seem to find ourselves on the bitter end of "sender's remorse" once in a while. With all the practice we have typing up emails, you'd think we'd have perfected the art, but the reality is that because email is such an instant and easy form of communication, proper email etiquette often slips through the cracks.

Who Wants Voicemail Transcription on Their iPhone? I Do! I Do!

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Jun 15, 2011

When you download the free Voxox iPhone app - Voxox Call - you get a bunch of cool features, but one of my personal favorites is voicemail transcription.

When you sign up for the app, you get a free phone number (which has a slew of features worthy of a separate blog entry). You can select a free number across the U.S. or purchase a Canadian virtual number that also gets you the same perks. Any time someone calls that number and leaves you a voicemail, you can view the transcription right on your iPhone. Here's how this works:

So whether you want to give your Voxox number out as your primary phone number, your business line, or to your blind dates, you now have the option to never listen to a long, drawn-out voicemail again.

Check it out, you'll love it...

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Jun 11, 2010

What’s cool about Voxox is its flexibility. That’s because we strive to make things as convenient for you as possible. Take Voxox voicemail, for example. When someone calls your Voxox number and leaves a voicemail, the messages stored within Voxox are accessible not one, not two, not three, but FOUR different ways! You can access them via:

(1) Phone call -- by calling into the Voxox service from any phone (and dialing *YourCode#)

(2) SMS -- by receiving a text link to your mobile phone

(3) Email -- by receiving an mp3 file sent to your email address

(4) Voxox desktop client -- by checking the Messages icon in the Apps tab

Pretty handy for those of us who are always on the go… isn’t that everyone these days?  Check out the below instructions on how to set all this up!

Say Happy Earth Day With a Fax from Voxox!

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Apr 22, 2010

Faxing used to be the best way to get a document to someone in a hurry (bypassing snail mail) but you still had to have a fax machine and a phone number.  Now there are many fax options available online that allow you to send and receive from your computer; however, most of them take advantage of the fact that you would normally pay for a phone line and they charge accordingly -- anywhere from $5.95 per month to $19.95 per month, plus per minute charges.

Then, in walks Voxox. From your Voxox account, receiving faxes is FREE and you pay Voxox's cheap per minute rates for the use of outbound faxing. For example, U.S. and Canada per minute rates are only 1 cent per minute, so, it will cost you something like half a penny to fax one page within the U.S. and Canada. How cool is that?

And, let’s not forget that it's Earth Day today. We can contribute to saving trees if we simply reduce the amount of paper used by regular faxes.  With Voxox you can stop “printing” on your end, plugging into a machine, sending over a phone line, and having it “printed” on the other end.

Traveling This Holiday Season? Voxox Just Upped Its Travel Game

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Dec 02, 2009

Hi gang! Today we announced some feature enhancements geared at international travelers, just in time for the holidays! Check out our recent traveler-related developments below…

• Have you heard of SMS CallBack? It’s a feature that really differentiates Voxox from services like Skype and Google Voice because it doesn’t tie you to the desktop to make calls! With SMS CallBack, you can call internationally for pennies per minute from pretty much any mobile phone around the globe – no Internet connection required. In fact, The New York Times’ Frugal Traveler tested the service in August and called the feature his favorite new way to call home while traveling. Once you’re set up, all you need is a local SMS-enabled cell phone and you can place calls from any supported location. What’s new today is that we’ve now made a bunch of usability improvements, including upgrading our web portal and making the Voxox SMS CallBack number an easy to remember “vanity” phone line - (323) 335-5555.

Somebody Buggin' You on the Phone? Make Sure They Hit a Dead End With Voxox

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Nov 30, 2009

Sometimes we do it when we’re busy, sometimes after a few beers, but there are just some people whose phone calls you let ring, and ring, and ring some more—every time they call. They don’t necessarily even have to be bad people, maybe they “did you wrong” as some would say, or maybe they’re just not very talented at life. Either way, the kibosh has been put on their calls.

Instead of having to go through this charade over and over, how ‘bout an easier solution like “Dead-Ending” their calls on Voxox, or as Kevin, one of our Big Kahunas, calls it, “The Ex-Girlfriend Feature.”

Be a Better Friend -- Use Voxox!

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Nov 17, 2009

Voxox wants you to be a better friend. That’s right, you read it correctly. I mean, when’s the last time you tried to get in touch with your buddy who went abroad? You keep saying that you mean to call right? But you still don’t, and we think we know why.

Keeping up with friends dispersed around the globe is not easy. We mean well, but we get caught up in our jobs, our social lives at home, and whatever else we’re doing (watching re-runs of “30 Rock” online) that we put off that call, forget to send that email, or never plan that visit. Sometimes the same can be said about calling our friends where we live, that’s why we text right? What if you could text Juan in Chile, holla’ at Tai in Dublin, and give a shout out to Scott in Miami all for barely nothing? Here’s where Voxox comes in (bet you didn’t see that coming). Worldwide texting plans start at $9.95 a month, for unlimited texts.
