Cheapest Way to Call Voxox Online Numbers in Brazil and 45 Other Places

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Jun 10, 2011

A few weeks ago, Skype suspended their online numbers in Brazil. This was said to be a temporary arrangement; however, we have not seen the numbers become available yet.  So, we wanted to share some helpful tips on how folks in Brazil (and 45 other countries/territories) can receive free calls on their  desktop from any phone by using Voxox and our special iNum integration.

This is huge!  Not only do you get calls for free on your desktop, but also friends and family who call YOU from landlines, mobiles, etc. pay a local rate in these 45 regions. Here's how it works:

First, active your (FREE) iNum number at the Voxox online store.
When you sign up for Voxox, you get a free U.S. phone number. You also get an option to grab a free iNum number for your Voxox account at our online Store at My.Voxox:

You can then use the vanity search when selecting your iNum number -- stick to 3 or 4 letters or numbers for best results. When you've found a number you like, click Activate:

Now you can receive calls to your Voxox number through iNum. Here's how:

Let’s say your family lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and your mom wants to call you from her home phone.
    1. Send her your new iNum number that you activated, and tell her to save it in her records as "[your name]‘s iNum." (Tip: your iNum number does not change.)
    2. Point her to this list of local access phone numbers.
    3. When she is ready to call you, she should dial the local access number that is closest to her location (Tip: in this case, it would be +55 1137119355 for Sao Paolo)
    4. When prompted, she should enter your iNum number, which you gave her in Step 1.
    5. Her call will immediately be routed to your Voxox account wherever you are, and follow any forwarding rules you’ve set up. Pick up and say hello!
In this scenario, your mom is just paying her carrier for a local Sao Paolo call. If you're receiving the call with Voxox for the desktop, you're paying nothing. Period. If you're forwarding calls to other phones, there's a small outbound usage charge, according to our cheap VoIP rates. You get other perks too - check out our How-To Guide on iNum to learn more about using iNum with your Voxox account.

One last thing... in addition to low cost and free Internet-based calling, users who receive inbound calls to a Voxox phone number get a ton of other perks, including the ability to simultaneously forward calls to any 5 calling devices (similar to the Google Voice), digitally record calls, transfer calls to other devices and create a 20-party conference call all by simply pressing star commands (like *1) on their phone's keypad.

So why now get your free iNum number today?  Go to the Voxox store to activate yours for free.

Traveling This Summer? Five Easy Steps for International Texting With Your iPhone

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Jun 09, 2011

My parents are going to Rome this summer and renting an apartment for several days.  The apartment owner requested for them to send a text message when they arrive at the airport..... Tricky to do from an airport payphone, right?

International travel has always been tough without a mobile phone, but even though expectations have changed, and the number of mobile phones has ballooned to an absurd statistic, connecting abroad continues to be a challenge. Now, if you have an iPhone (and know how to turn off roaming), international texting can actually be very cheap and easy. Here's how:

1) Download the free Voxox Call app

The free Voxox Call iPhone app has worldwide texting capabilities. It's free to receive an inbound SMS and just 1 to 2 pennies to send. (1 cent to U.S. and Canada, 2 cents to the rest of the world.)

2) Make your iPhone "Wi-fi only."

Before you board the plane out of the country, make sure to turn off everything that will incur roaming fees -- that's international voice AND data. Check with your carrier for tips, either online or you may want to call (dial 611 if you're with AT&T) to confirm that you're doing everything right so that you don't get billed.

3) Program any important numbers into your iPhone Contacts list.

The Voxox Call app syncs with your iPhone Contacts list, so it's very convenient to access numbers already programmed on your phone.

4) Set your "Default Country Code" in the Voxox Call app.

If you're planning to send SMS largely within Italy, it's a very good idea to set the Italian country code within the Voxox Call app. Go to "More"-> "Phone Settings" and select your "Default Country Code".  You can change this anytime you're sending an SMS to a new country -- note that the "Default Country Code" setting should reflect where you're sending the text message (not where you're located at the time).

5) Text away!

Check out the video below where our CTO Kevin Hertz demonstrates how to send SMS within the Voxox Call app. Since you've turned off your mobile data connection (3G/GPRS/EDGE), you'll need to be in a wi-fi zone. Wi-fi is available in many international airports, hotels and restaurants.

One final note: the texts you send will be coming to your contacts from your free VoxOx number, which you'll get when you sign up for VoxOx. So, the best and least expensive (even free!) way to have an SMS conversation using the VoxOx app is when both people have it, though that is definitely not required.

Happy Travels!

Social Media Takeover: Does Anyone Talk in Person Anymore?

Posted by Tristan Barnum on Jun 02, 2011

While tinkering around the internet the other day, I stumbled upon an article from TechCrunch outlining the Geosocial Universe of 2011 and instantly thought, "This must be shared this with the world." So, here we are.

What is a Geosocial Universe you ask? It is the virtual landscape of social networks and how many registered users each network has. Similar to how our Earth's landscape changes, the Geosocial Universe changes as well. First it was MySpace, then Facebook... so what's next? New networks are cropping up all the time, and we're always looking for a different way to communicate. Call me a geek, but it's really interesting how many people are connected via social media - a member of  Facebook alone has potential access to 629 million individuals! Even sites you and I may not have heard of have more subscribers than I ever imagined.

Check out these stats from TechCrunch to get a better idea:

  • Facebook: 629 million registered users with almost 250 million people accessing the site via mobile
  • Qzone: China’s version of Facebook, Qzone, has 480 million registered users
  • Twitter: 200 million registered users with nearly 40% of people tweeting via mobile
  • Email: Hotmail still dominates, but Gmail's popularity is gaining fast
  • Yelp: Yelp tops 50 million unique visitors per month, and  it's made moves to team up with OpenTable
  • Foursquare and Gowalla: These geographically based medias are still growing
  • Smartphones: 21.8% of all mobile devices are smart phones, with Nokia on top the list in sales

For all you visual folks, take a look at this infograph that outlines the number active users on the top 19 social media sites. (P.S. I'm sure you can't miss that big blue bubble indicating 5.3 billion cell phone are used worldwide - that's 77% of the world's population!):

Crazy stuff, huh? I can only imagine what these stats will be next year, or even six months from now. Are you registered on any, or maybe even all of these networks? If you fall into the latter, Voxox can help keep all your buddies, friends, fans, and followers organized by integrating them into one interface where you chat, Tweet, post, call, fax, update, email, and a ton of other cool things. According to Entrepreneur magazine (6/11 issue), "next to Skype’s limited, walled garden approach, Voxox is a cross-platform love fest." But don't take their word for it, try the "love fest" out for yourself!

Posted by Tristan Barnum on May 27, 2011

We kicked off 2011 with the launch of a fresh new look for our Voxox brand, including our new logo, Voxox UI redesign and a new Voxox.com. It's all been very well received, and now, in line with our new brand direction, we're giving a new homepage a try. It's very cool with new graphics, interactive elements and a whole lotta love from the marketing team. But more than that, we chose to use real Voxox team members and their friends in order to give a more authentic appeal to our web site and marketing materials.

Techy vs. Tacky: Tech Etiquette for the Overly Chatty

Posted by Tristan Barnum on May 24, 2011

Here's the scenario. You're on a train cruising up the West Coast and a woman next to you is talking on her cell phone. You think nothing of it, and pull out People magazine and your stash of Skittles and try to enjoy the ride. A couple hours later your Skittles are gone, you now know where Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga vacation, and the woman next to you is still on her phone. You (and everyone else in the train car) are beginning to get annoyed, you ask her to be quiet; she keeps talking and talking. The car attendants ask to to turn her phone off, she doesn't. Then 16 hours later everyone snaps and police arrest her for disorderly conduct. True story. Lakeysha Beard was recently arrested in Oregon for talking too loudly for 16 consecutive hours on a quiet Amtrak car.

Ok, did anyone pick up on this... 16 hours later!? How did people last that long without ripping the phone from her hands? You know what you could do in 16 hours? Well, a lot of things, but talking on the phone shouldn't be one of them.

I've stumbled upon a few articles that defend this woman's rights of expression. Rights of expression? No way. That's just plain rude and probably causes some sort of cancer. Since 16 hours now defines the point at which a phone call becomes an annoyance, let's see how you would react when your ears are pushed to the limit.

My Voxox Call Story. From San Diego to Serbia While I Drive to Work.

Posted by Tristan Barnum on May 18, 2011

I’ve been using our first iPhone app --Voxox Call-- for a little while now, and wanted to share how useful it is for me personally.

My dad currently lives in Serbia, which is 9 hours ahead of where I live.  I like to chat with him every 2 weeks or so but I previously had a hard time coordinating a time to call him.  My issue was that I do not have the time to call him during the day at work and when I get home he is sleeping, that only leaves the morning.  Problem is I am not a morning person so I don’t have a lot of time between the time I get up and the time I get in the car to go to work.  I do have a 30 minute commute but in the past I could not call him because my cell phone does not have international calling turned on and if I did it would cost too much to use it (over $1 per minute to Serbia).

The Voxox Call iPhone app has helped me solve this problem.  I open the app, click on Contacts, then his name. After a couple of seconds, Voxox calls me back with my dad on the line. I get inbound calls free with my mobile carrier, so all I pay is Voxox's reasonable international rates. (I pay approximately $.08 per minute to the call out to my dad's landline and another penny per minute for Voxox to call my U.S. mobile back. Voxox actually bridges the two calls for a cheap cumulative $.09 per minute rate.)

So, on my way to work I can catch up with my dad. And save on my phone bill with cheap international calls. What will they think of next?

Check out Voxox Call video demo here. Download iPhone app here.
