OK, so we recognize that you have probably seen quite a few articles recently touting some trend or technology as “the future of business.” But at the risk of sounding like all those other guys, we’d like to talk about a trend that actually will shape the future of work. How do we know for sure? Because it is already starting to happen! Here’s why:
Better technology
Working from outside the office has always had its advantages, but recent technological innovations have made it more attractive than ever. For instance, virtual business phone systems have made it possible for companies to communicate effectively and inexpensively from other towns, cities or states. The system is web-based and therefore can be accessed from anywhere you can connect to the Internet.
It’s not just for millennials and moms anymore
Traditionally telecommuting was thought to be an option for new moms watching young kids and Generation Y-ers who grew up worshipping at the altar of mobile. But times are changing and telecommuting is becoming more popular across various demographics. In fact, only 32 percent of respondents to a recent teleworking survey said they have children. Additionally, 71 percent of respondents who do most of their work outside the office are men.
Employers are coming around
A 2014 survey found that 20 percent of companies still don’t allow telecommuting—but that means 80 percent are on board. Why? The same reason businesses embrace most change—money. With the right technology and policies in place companies can drive productivity and cut down on business travel and real estate expenses costs by allowing remote working.
“The cost savings especially related to reduce real estate overhead is driving more organizations to embrace telework," said Cali Williams Yost, CEO and founder of consulting firm Flex + Strategy Group in an interview. "And there are personal productivity gains from not having to commute as often or not being disrupted every day in the office.”
