My stepfather, Bob, is 89 years old. To get your brain around what it means to be 89, consider this: As a young adult, he was one of the brave soldiers who landed in the D-Day invasion at Normandy.

He is literally a part of history. He’s also an “early adopter.” Which is why he was the first person — way back in the 1990s — from whom I’d ever heard the term “VoIP.”

I was once the happy recipient of a plastic dog food cap. Often freebies are things we’ll never use. But we can all use free phone calls! And that’s just one of the features to expect when choosing a mobile VoIP app.

You deserve a vacation! But sometimes taking a vacation is more work than staying on the job. There’s the planning, tuning up the car, scheduling flights, coordinating the kids’ school breaks, finding a pet sitter. Then there’s all that packing (“What if I forget something?”). You may start to think it’s too much trouble, but the promise of new experiences keeps you on track. In the end it’ll all be worth it.

In this digital age, for better or worse, we are bombarded with data. Since the advent of smartphones, the only thing we need to do to write a paper or solve an argument is reach into our pockets and pull out the phone. Information is readily available. But time was when mnemonics were used prodigiously to retain information not yet available on small devices living in our pockets.

In Jules Verne’s 1873 adventure novel, Around the World in Eighty Days, Phileas Fogg travels by train, steamer ship, elephant (and anything else he can find) to advance his journey and win a bet he’s made with his friends. Graphically, Around the World in Eighty Days has been consistently linked with images of hot air balloons. Surprisingly, however, Verne’s hero never uses one in the novel — it’s merely a marketing invention to help sell the movie.¹ And, like the fictitious Phileas himself, I’ve also never taken to the skies in a balloon.

If you want something to be known by everyone, just tell my sister. She can’t keep a secret. This can work to my advantage or disadvantage. If there’s a surprise party being planned, I can usually winkle it out of her. If I need her help with surprising someone, beware! In any surprise-planning situation, there’s a 50-50 chance of an information leak. If there is a leak, there’s a 95% chance it was my sister.
