Everyone loves to get something for free. We’ll even pay to get it. “Spend $75 today and get a free gift!” It doesn’t even matter what it is. It could be free shipping or a free piggy bank. I was once the happy recipient of a plastic dog food cap. Often freebies are things we’ll never use. But we can all use free phone calls! And that’s just one of the features to expect when choosing a mobile VoIP app.

Barriers
“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
This iconic phrase from President Ronald Reagan’s 1987 speech at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin echoes through recent history — a call to break down the infamous Berlin Wall and unite a country separated by war and politics.

You deserve a vacation! But sometimes taking a vacation is more work than staying on the job. There’s the planning, tuning up the car, scheduling flights, coordinating the kids’ school breaks, finding a pet sitter. Then there’s all that packing (“What if I forget something?”). You may start to think it’s too much trouble, but the promise of new experiences keeps you on track. In the end it’ll all be worth it.

In this digital age, for better or worse, we are bombarded with data. Since the advent of smartphones, the only thing we need to do to write a paper or solve an argument is reach into our pockets and pull out the phone. Information is readily available. But time was when mnemonics were used prodigiously to retain information not yet available on small devices living in our pockets.

In Jules Verne’s 1873 adventure novel, Around the World in Eighty Days, Phileas Fogg travels by train, steamer ship, elephant (and anything else he can find) to advance his journey and win a bet he’s made with his friends. Graphically, Around the World in Eighty Days has been consistently linked with images of hot air balloons. Surprisingly, however, Verne’s hero never uses one in the novel — it’s merely a marketing invention to help sell the movie.1 And, like the fictitious Phileas himself, I’ve also never taken to the skies in a balloon.

Gossip Group
If you want something to be known by everyone, just tell my sister. She can’t keep a secret. This can work to my advantage or disadvantage. If there’s a surprise party being planned, I can usually winkle it out of her. If I need her help with surprising someone, beware! In any surprise-planning situation, there’s a 50-50 chance of an information leak. If there is a leak, there’s a 95% chance it was my sister.

Before - People love makeovers. We’re fascinated by the process of transformation — of seeing potential where some only see “glasses and a ponytail.” In the OTT world — which you are a part of if you’re using any communications app on your smartphone — we’ve seen an evolution right before our eyes. From absolutely zero pimped-out features to practically limitless possibilities.

A Brief History Lesson
Remember Watergate? In case you’re not over 50 or knowledgeable in mid-twentieth century history, here’s the encapsulated version. In the early seventies, as part of an illegal “intelligence gathering” operation, top Nixon officials ordered burglary and phone tapping at the DNC Headquarters in the Watergate hotel complex. The cover-up that ensued rocked the political landscape, resulting in multiple convictions along with the first and only resignation of a U.S. president to date.

I used to think there was no such thing as “unwanted attention.” I pined for the limelight and entertained with bad jokes and silly impressions. My social calendar grew.
Then I got a stalker.

I live in southern California. Our friend Mark lives in the Bay Area. He tours vineyards in Napa Valley, Europe and New Zealand. I know this because he loves to digitally share his adventures with his friends: photos of his journeys, bottles he’s tasted and the sheer beauty of wherever he happens to be. The locations are wonderful. The photos and videos are breathtaking.
