Textiquette — The Polite Way to Text

Posted by Ian LeWinter on Nov 20, 2014

Recently someone I know (not me, I swear) was dumped in a text message. I think she was more shocked about how he broke up with her than she was about the actual breakup, and after seeing his cowardly approach, she and I agreed she was well rid of him. It was the equivalent of the Sex and the City episode where Berger breaks up with Carrie on a Post-It note.

Relationships are complicated enough without all the potential misunderstandings, awkwardness and social blunders that careless texting can bring. So in an effort to keep you from becoming “one of them,” the fine folks at Voxox present you with this Textiquette Guide.

As ubiquitous as it has become, there is a time and a place to text and certain guidelines to be adhered to in the text message itself.

When (and when not to) text

In a dating situation, texting can be useful for getting to know a new acquaintance better. In between dates, you can send a quick “hello” or a photo to keep things going. Some cautionary notes: In a brand-new relationship texts should be brief, infrequent and PG-rated. Save the steamy stuff for later.

Send something funny! Good, clean humor is appropriate in nearly any situation. Few things break the tension or build friendships faster than a good chuckle together.

However when you feel a text message has you in a snit, don’t jump to any hasty conclusions. You could be just misinterpreting their intention. It’s easy for this to happen when you can’t hear the nuances in a person’s voice. This might be a good time for a voice call to clarify things.

Don’t message angry! Lots of unintended things can come out in a heated moment and once you hit send, you can never take them back. It’s best to cool off and pull your thoughts together — and then let ‘em have it!

But don’t wait too long! Many people feel affronted when a response isn’t immediate. If there are delays, a quick message can keep someone happy until you’re available for conversation.

Where (and where not to) text

Let’s start with driving. Aside from the obvious dangers (in 2012, over 3,200 people were killed in car accidents in which the driver was distracted)1, it’s inconsiderate to your passengers and to other drivers near you. When it comes to texting while driving, stop, apply the system and don’t.

Weddings, funerals, sociology class, meetings and date night are several more instances where texting might be frowned upon. I’ve heard many stories from friends (once again, not me) going on a first date with someone they met online and having to sit through a dinner of constant interruptions. On the other hand, texting while out with someone who is less than nice is a great way to let the person know you don’t want to see him or her again. Much better than a Post-It note.

With all the social media available, it’s easy to connect with people, especially if you connect over Voxox. Yes, there’s a time and place for everything, so when you’re ready to connect, text (or call) for free with Voxox.
