Free International Calls Made Simple

Posted by Ian LeWinter on Aug 27, 2015

At the end of the month, I leave for a two-week vacation in Italy. It’s exciting, despite the crazy amount of planning that goes into a trip of this magnitude. I bought a Fodor’s Guide to Italy that’s — no joke — 985 pages! There are myriad decisions to be made, from the critically important, “Where are we going to stay?” to the most mundane, “What socks should I bring?”

From Telegraph to Free Calling App: Great Milestones in Telecommunications

Posted by Ian LeWinter on Aug 13, 2015

Wait … Who invented the telephone?

It’s always a little bit disconcerting when you find out things aren’t what you thought they were. Classic example: Pluto. Growing up, we were taught that Pluto was the ninth planet, discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. I wonder how Clyde would have felt about its downgrading to planetoid in 1992? Suddenly Pluto is no longer a planet? Appalling. Years later, tomatoes were called into question. Fruit or vegetable? When I was told that a hare isn’t a rabbit, well, that’s when I lost it. There’s a vague feeling of betrayal that comes with these revelations. I was taught this stuff in school, and now it’s wrong?

All Data Is Created Equal — Including Your Free Calls

Posted by Ian LeWinter on Jul 30, 2015

After a recent decision, the FCC has decided to regulate Internet Service Providers in the same way common carriers (a.k.a., phone and cable companies) are regulated. While some concerned citizens are crying “foul,” saying it’s the government’s first step toward regulating the Internet, the reality is simpler and much less ominous.

Q and A: Free Texting With VoIP

Posted by Ian LeWinter on Jul 16, 2015

Remember the kid in school who asked all the questions? Even when everyone else in class seemed to get the lesson, this kid would keep asking. The same kid wore glasses, read books through recess, ate lunch alone, and is now likely the wealthiest person at the class reunion.

Common Misconceptions About Free Calling Using VoIP

Posted by Ian LeWinter on Jul 02, 2015

People hate to say “I don’t know.” It’s just human nature. Many times I’ve found myself inventing things in order to avoid saying those dreaded words. As a result, in an effort to not sound ignorant when asked something I can’t answer, I’ve inadvertently spread misinformation and wound up sounding more ignorant than if I’d only said “I don’t know.”

Five Signs You're Ready To Try a Free Calling App

Posted by Ian LeWinter on Jun 04, 2015

Every month I’m stumped as to why my $9.99 per line mobile plan, with unlimited free texting, is costing me $240. There are only three lines on my plan, but in reality I’m paying $24 per line. I’m not complaining [necessarily], just a little confused. Are you, like me, wishing for a more predictable monthly bill?  And what else do you wish for in your mobile communications?

BRIC and the Mobile First Economy

Posted by Ian LeWinter on May 07, 2015

Brazil, Russia, India and China. What do they have in common? Well, economists believe these four countries — collectively known as BRIC countries — are in a comparable phase of economic progress they term “newly advanced.”

Why are the BRIC countries important? Financial clout, pure and simple. Goldman Sachs has predicted the BRIC economies will eclipse the combined economies of the richest countries of the world.1

From Alexander Graham Bell to Free Calling Apps: Great Moments in Telecom

Posted by Ian LeWinter on Apr 23, 2015

It has been less than 150 years since the first telephone was invented. Personally, I can’t think of another device that has undergone more radical changes since its inception. If he were to look at an iPhone today, Alexander Graham Bell wouldn’t even recognize his invention,* let alone understand what a free calling app is!

Bell had a long road ahead getting buy-in from the public and patenting his invention. Fortunately for us, enlightened individuals kept it alive. Today telecommunications is one of the most exciting industries in the world. Let’s take a look at how far we’ve come.
