Hipster trends

A couple of years ago, I bought a record player for a hundred dollars. In the ensuing months I went on a vinyl binge that got me thinking I was pretty hip. I hit every record store in town, carefully examining each record for scratches, even making the shopkeeper play them in the store before I made a buying decision. A few months later, the record player started malfunctioning, with the turntable slowing intermittently, and my brief hipster fantasy came to an end.

I’d like to leave a message

Remember secretaries? They were the people who worked in an office and were dedicated to assisting their boss. Secretaries answered the phone, took messages, kept the boss’ schedule, remembered important birthdays and a myriad of other tasks, some perhaps quite loosely associated with the actual transactions of the business.

The selfie has gotten a bad rap. Blame it on the “sexters” or the Narcissists. Personally, I blame the hipsters, who hate everything. You could also blame it on the nuts who take selfies with a homeless person, then text it to their friends. Can someone please tell me what’s funny about that?

When you need to share a special moment, do you instantly start to compose a text message or do you go straight to your dialpad and make a call? A recent survey done by research firm ORC International^[1] shows that over 70 percent of adults prefer voice calling to texting when sharing important news. Not surprisingly (but a little amusingly) the survey of over 1,000 adults was conducted over the phone.

With the use of OTT communications on the rise, operators have been warming up to the fact that strategic partnerships with OTT services are necessary if they want to attract new subscribers and recoup lost revenues. Although many operators have already made the move, there's still a lot of opportunity for mobile providers to get involved.

Growing up, I never understood the entertainment value of horror films. In fact, I was terrified of them. Every Saturday, my mom would drop off a group of us kids at the movies for a double feature, regardless of what was playing. (The MPAA ratings system was in its infancy then.)

Remember the meme, “There’s an app for that”? Whatever your need may be, these days there are likely many apps available to accomplish it. One obscure — but surprisingly useful — app is from Charmin. Called “Sit or Squat,” it’s a utility for finding public restrooms. Users rate the cleanliness of each pit stop. Great for road trips!

But let’s face it — your phone’s primary purpose is calling and texting. And if you use an app that gives you free calling and texting, you’ve hit upon a great way to save your hard-earned dollars and still get all the benefits of your smartphone.

The First Technological President

Before Al Gore there was Abraham Lincoln.

Despite his detractors’ statements to the contrary, the former Vice President never actually claimed to have invented the Internet. However, he did recognize its importance and was considered by Vinton Cerf (the man often referred to as the "father of the Internet") to be the “first political leader to promote and support its development.

Yes, the government can listen to your phone conversations. They can record them too. But unless you’re saying something really interesting to some really interesting people, they probably aren’t. Call it “national security insurance.”
