When you need to share a special moment, do you instantly start to compose a text message or do you go straight to your dialpad and make a call? A recent survey done by research firm ORC International^[1] shows that over 70 percent of adults prefer voice calling to texting when sharing important news. Not surprisingly (but a little amusingly) the survey of over 1,000 adults was conducted over the phone.

With the use of OTT communications on the rise, operators have been warming up to the fact that strategic partnerships with OTT services are necessary if they want to attract new subscribers and recoup lost revenues. Although many operators have already made the move, there's still a lot of opportunity for mobile providers to get involved.

Growing up, I never understood the entertainment value of horror films. In fact, I was terrified of them. Every Saturday, my mom would drop off a group of us kids at the movies for a double feature, regardless of what was playing. (The MPAA ratings system was in its infancy then.)

Remember the meme, “There’s an app for that”? Whatever your need may be, these days there are likely many apps available to accomplish it. One obscure — but surprisingly useful — app is from Charmin. Called “Sit or Squat,” it’s a utility for finding public restrooms. Users rate the cleanliness of each pit stop. Great for road trips!

But let’s face it — your phone’s primary purpose is calling and texting. And if you use an app that gives you free calling and texting, you’ve hit upon a great way to save your hard-earned dollars and still get all the benefits of your smartphone.
